FINANCE INDUSTRY

Overview
The finance industry in Tanzania plays a pivotal role in supporting economic development, facilitating investment, and promoting financial inclusion across the country. The sector encompasses a range of institutions including commercial banks, microfinance institutions, savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs), insurance companies, capital markets, and mobile financial service providers. Over the years, Tanzania has made significant progress in expanding access to financial services, driven by regulatory reforms, technological innovation, and the rapid adoption of mobile money platforms. The Bank of Tanzania serves as the central regulatory authority, ensuring financial stability and fostering a conducive environment for sector growth. Key initiatives such as the National Financial Inclusion Framework have contributed to increased participation of underserved populations in the formal financial system. While challenges (viewed as opportunities) persist—such as limited access in rural areas, low financial literacy, and the need for greater digital infrastructure—the sector continues to evolve, offering strong potential for enhancing economic resilience, supporting entrepreneurship, and driving inclusive growth.
