TECHNOLOGY & Telecommunications

Overview

The technology and telecommunications sector in Tanzania is one of the fastest-growing industries, playing a vital role in enhancing connectivity, driving innovation, and supporting socio-economic development. The sector includes mobile network operators, internet service providers, tech startups, and digital platforms that offer a wide range of services from mobile banking and e-commerce to e-learning and health tech. With over 50 million mobile subscriptions and expanding internet penetration, mobile technology has become a major enabler of financial inclusion, communication, and access to information. Government initiatives such as the National ICT Policy and investments in broadband infrastructure aim to promote digital transformation, bridge the urban-rural digital divide, and attract investment in the digital economy. Regulatory oversight is provided by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), which ensures sector growth, consumer protection, and fair competition. While challenges remain—such as high data costs, limited rural connectivity, and digital literacy gaps—the sector continues to evolve rapidly, offering strong potential to boost productivity, create jobs, and position Tanzania as a regional digital innovation hub.
